Airtel, Jio’s closest rival, has struck its own notable AI alliance with Perplexity, an advanced search and research AI platform. Every Airtel subscriber—prepaid, postpaid, broadband, and DTH—receives 12 months of Perplexity Pro at no extra cost (valued at ₹17,000). Key features include:
Airtel’s deal is exclusive, meaning Perplexity is not available via other telcos in India, and the partnership was designed to scale Perplexity’s presence rapidly in the region.techcrunch+1
Perplexity is leveraging global telecom alliances to compete directly with OpenAI and Google in mass-market scale. Besides Airtel, it partners with Motorola (Edge and Razr phones), SoftBank (Japan), and SK Telecom (Korea), aiming for easy access and device-level integration. In India, Airtel’s partnership is the most significant, quickly driving user growth—with Perplexity downloads surging over 500% in 2025.linkedin+1

Vodafone Idea’s approach is distinct: rather than partnering with a global AI consumer brand, it is working with TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) to overhaul its back-end operations and customer experience platform via AI. The partnership integrates machine learning and automation to personalize services, fight fraud with telco APIs, and enable remote connectivity using satellite tech. Vodafone Idea is showcasing innovations at events like the India Mobile Congress, focusing on enterprise skilling and API-based fraud prevention, rather than direct free consumer access to an AI assistant.telecom.economictimes.indiatimes+1
